The Creative Writing Competition (CWC) aims to recognise outstanding student writing and encourage the practice of creative writing among Singapore’s youth. It contains three categories — poetry, fiction and plays — and is open to all students undergoing pre-university or tertiary education as well as full-time National Servicemen (NSFs). Each of the three categories is judged by an established local poet/writer, with prizes going to the top three entrants in that category.

The judges for the 2009/2010 CWC will be confirmed at a later date. The closing date for entries is 15 November 2009, 5pm. Entrants need not pay any administrative fee to participate.

3rd Prize: S$50

Short Stories:

Prizes are subject to change without notice. The judges have the right to not award a first prize if they feel that the calibre of entries does not merit it.

The NUS Literary Society will be holding our Welcome Tea on the 18th Aug 2009 at AS5 03/09 (outside LT8, near the Litsoc noticeboard) at 6pm. Our outgoing exco will be there to explain more about LitSoc and answer any queries which you may have. There is no restriction of faculty, major or year of study to join us; everyone is welcome! Food and drinks will be available (well, it is a welcome *tea* =p) so we hope to see you then!

The Nus Literary Society will be present on both days at the booth of the Department of English Language and Literature. We’d be there to answer any questions about the English Language and English Literature majors, about the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, about NUS at large, and of course about our society. =)

Event: LitSoc Film Screening

Film Title: Midnight Cowboy (1968)

The NUS Literary Society holds an annual (or biannual, as time and other congruent factors allow) movie screening. The movie chosen each year is based on its literary value, and this year we’ve decided to go with Midnight Cowboy, an old film but with a brilliant social commentary.

Do come down and join us in the appreciation of this film, and partake in the bonding session. See you there!

The annual NUS Literary Society Evening of Poetry and Music will feature upcoming writers and literary figures, interspersed with live musical performances from NUS music groups. NUS Litsoc will be holding our Bazaar at the NUS Central Forum (below Central Library) from 29th – 30th Sep 2008. There will be three book stalls, food stalls, fashion/accessories and more! Please come down and support us if you are in the area.

Following the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of NUS Litsoc on 26th Aug 2008, the new batch of Executive Committee members took over the reins of Litsoc for the new Academic Year. We thank the members of the previous exco for their service over the past year, and wish them all the best in their exchange.

The Litsoc Welcome Tea was successfully held on 18th August 2008, 6 pm. Topics covered include the list of “delightful activities” for the following year, the exco positions available, and a sharing session where new members had the opportunity to chat with seniors regarding the exco posts and the responsibilities entailed, NUS modules, and just about anything under the sun.

The next Annual General Meeting (AGM) for NUS Literary Society is set to be on 26th August 2008 (Tuesday), 6 pm, at AS5-03-09 (outside LT8 and behind the Litsoc Notice Board), the same place as the Welcome Tea. If you have missed the Welcome Tea but would like to join Litsoc as a member or as part of the exco, do come down as well!
